Product Overview
When trying to determine which pass catchers we want on our teams, one of the best predictors of fantasy success is a metric known as "Air Yards."
Air Yards measure how far a pass travels beyond the line of scrimmage when thrown to a pass catcher, whether or not it was actually caught. If Justin Herbert throws a pass from the 25-yard line towards Keenan Allen standing at the 35-yard line, Allen will accumulate 10 air yards even if he drops the ball (he probably wouldn't though).
Why do air yards matter? Well, they give us an idea of a player's usage in their team's passing game.
1. If a player's air yards total is high, we can conclude that the player is a priority in the offense since lots of passes are thrown their way.
2. We may also include where the player is deployed when attacking the opposing defense. Higher air yards suggests the player is being used downfield, targeted on deep passes. These types of plays increase a player's upside because there is more big-play potential.
3. If a player's air yards total is low, either the player isn't utilized much, or is utilized closer to the line of scrimmage. Think slot WRs like Hunter Renfrow.
One predictive aspect of this metric is clear when compared to a pass catcher's actual yardage (when they actually catch the ball). If there is a big discrepancy between a player's air yards and actual receiving yards, we can infer that the player is getting looks despite being unable to catch the ball; if the player starts catching more of those passes, a potential breakout looms.
